• question: what is WilmaNet and where it's available ?
⇒ answer:
Wilma (which stands for Wireless Internet and Location Management Architecture) is a wireless network owned by Trento City Council and created with the objective to give free WiFi Internet access to users that specifically registered for its use; WilmaNet is the service runned by ICT company Ital GM on behalf of the City of Trento in order to guarantee the correct use of the wireless network by all registered users; more info is available in the "ABOUT US" section of this portal together with a map that clearly shows the current area of coverage of the WilmaNet service.
• question: how do you become users of the WilmaNet service ?
⇒ answer:
due to the current legislation in Italy which regulates public Internet access (article 4 M.D. issued on 16.08.2005), it is necessary to register by supplying all the required information and specific references about a valid ID document; the best way, and also the faster, is to carry out an online "pre-registration" thanks to a specific form available within this portal (click here to access it); following this pre-registration phase, it's necessary to go personally within 15 days from date of pre-registration (after which period it will be necessary to repeat the registration process!) to a Registration Centre available to new users with the same ID document indicated during pre-registration so that staff there present can make a copy of it and check its validity; once this operation is over, a printout will be handed over to the new user with all the details previously submitted together with personal User Name and Password for the immediate use of the WilmaNet service; the Registration Centres are :

• question: how do I access the Wilma network and use the WilmaNet Service ?
⇒ answer:
as user of the WilmaNet service, you can access the Internet in wireless mode by following few simple steps. To begin, you will need to have a laptop or wireless enabled device (i.e. Pocket PC, palmtops and/or last generation of mobile phones) and a web browser. Most laptops have built-in wireless capability. If your device does not have this capability, you may need to purchase a wireless network card (available in PC-Card or Pen/USB) or you could take advantage of the line of products specifically made available by Ital GM and which are offered within two main solutions: WilmaNet Palm-Kit and PC-Kit (more information available at the WilmaNet Point).
With the device (notebook, palmtop, mobile phone) WiFi enabled, you can proceed with a WilmaNet services access:
1. Find and associate to WilmaNet by using the network connections manager on your WiFi-enabed device.
- OR -
You can create a wireless network connection to the SSID network name "Wilmanet". Your wireless network connection does not require additional security settings. WEP, WPA, and other 802.1x based encryption options should be disabled. Please note that all traffic transmitted between the access points of the Wilma network and the Internet is encrypted. However, traffic from a user's mobile device (such as a laptop) while connected to the WiFi node (access point) is not encrypted. Therefore, if there are particular and/or specific security issues for the transmission of information both in download and in upload during the use of the WilmaNet service, we suggest you to contact Ital GM in order to find out any possible solutions available to satisfy these requirements.
2. You will need to enable the DHCP option on your wireless network properties to automatically obtain an IP address directly from the WilmaNet service together with the DNS addresses.
3. Open your Internet browser, and log into the network by using your WilmaNet account (the same credentials obtained following your first registration and written on the printout given to you by the registration office). The login onto the wireless network will come thanks to the WilmaNet login page specific for user authentication. On successfull login, you'll be able to use your favourite web services such as surfing among sites, e-mail, etc. - note: the password is always case sensitive, so you need to type any single character in same lower or UPPER case format as when the password was defined by the system or by yourself.
(!) note for palm-top and/or smartphone users:
In consideration of the reduced level of management of certificates (SSL) by the browsers typically available on palm-top systems and/or smartphones, it is possible that users of this specific category of WiFi devices must confirm few times with YES (or OK) the acceptance of the SSL certificate submitted by the WilmaNet system in order to protect the authentication phase of each user in the exact moment of accessing the Wilma WiFi network. The authentication procedure of WilmaNet uses a triple protection with the employment of Equifax certificates which guarantees a high level of security during login. Anyway, once reached the login page of the WilmaNet portal, the clear presence of the familiar symbol of the “lock” near the url address bar of the browser confirms that the login phase necessary to access the Wilma network, and consequently the Internet, is totally protected.
• question: is WilmaNet also available inside buildings, offices and/or homes ?
⇒ answer:
The WiFi signal strength of the Wilma network, and consequently the availability of the WilmaNet service, may vary depending on your location also when inside the area covered by the service as visible from the map ("ABOUT US"). Some areas may be obstructed by buildings or trees. The Wilma network and the WilmaNet service aren't meant to be compatible with indoor usage like using the service when inside builidings, offices, shops and/or homes.
• question: after initial release following registration, can I change my password ?
⇒ answer:
Following your first registration, the WilmaNet service releases a User Name and Password for immediate access to the wireless network; a registered user though, can, in any moment, change the password with one of his or her choice; to do so you only need to click on the ">PASSWORD<" link that is available in the "login box" presented at the moment of the WiFi access to the Wilma network, and after that another click this time on the option ">>>CHANGE PASSWORD<<<"; from here you'll be redirected to a specific page where, after login with your current credentials, you'll be able to proceed with a password update in full freedom and with immediate effect. IMPORTANT: only the change of password is allowed and not the change of user name which, consequenlty, will stay forever the same one originally assigned by the WilmaNet service.
